I can't watch it

I really can’t watch the final episode of Battlestar Galactica. At least that’s the feeling I’m carrying with myself for over a week. It’s the same feeling I had with all my favorite tv shows (and I did watch quite a few final episodes). I suppose, that I’m not really good in letting things go. Especially when it’s fun.

I’m a big fan of a good story and a good ending. Latter isn’t always a given fact for good tv shows. The problem is the tv business. Good tv shows get canceled all the time. Take Kings as an. The ratings after only two episodes are just horrific – NBC will kill the show. No doubt about that.

But there are other great shows without a good ending. Deadwood is such a case. What an amazing show with the most stunning cast ever. What happened? HBO couldn’t afford another 50+ Mio tv show and Mr. Milch had set his mind on another project. The result was, that the show never got a real ending. What a shame.

There are good examples too. Star Trek: The Next Generation had an amazing final episode. The West Wing got an okay. And I’ve heard, that The Sopranos finale was mind blowing.

Back to Battlestar Galactica. I’m not really sure what to expect from the story for the final episode, because I’m sure that it will turn out to be something entirely else. Do I want a happy ending for a very dark and non-happy-place tv show? I’m not sure. I do want it to end with a glimmer of hope, but it just need to be true to the BSG we all love.

Ron Moore whom I love from his work for Star Trek: Deep Space 9 created with Battlestar Galactica somethings astonishing. BSG was incredible alive, dark and it did get way to often under my skin. That’s good and I really hope, that I get the same feeling in the last episode of the best Scifi tv show of the 21 century (yet).

  1. Not having watched much of the final season yet, my biggest fear is that the finale is going to increase the preachyness level ten-fold rather than finally provide some no-nonsense answers. Don’t get me wrong, there’s been a lot to like about BSG over the years – in the writing, acting and production departments – but the over-pretentiousness has increasingly gotten on my nerves with every new season. If I had a dollar for every time “god(s)” is uttered on the show, I’d be one rich man indeed.

Other genre shows that ended before their time and would have deserved better endings: “Earth 2”, “Veritas: The Quest” …
